Carl Benson Obituary

Carl Edwin Benson was born on November 25, 1957, in Birmingham, Alabama as the third of five children to Will and Mary Benson. As a child, Carl was bright and gifted, he was moved to Birmingham School's gifted student program in elementary school, affording him a scholarship to attend the prestigious private high school, Indian Springs School for the next three years. He graduated from George W. Carver High School, where he played Trombone in the band. After his high school graduation in 1974, Carl enlisted in the Navy, attending the Naval Academy where he excelled in math. After graduation , he was assigned to the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Aircraft Carrier and served as a Nuclear Reactor Operator aboard the ship. After serving his 6 year term in the military. Carl resigned his commission and was honorably discharged in 1982.

In the Spring of 1978, Carl met Patricia Worthy while in a school in Glen Falls, NY. They married in September 1979 in Ossining, NY following his overseas tour. They were married for 23 years and lived in Virginia Beach, VA, Columbus, OH, Portsmouth, VA and Houston, TX, where their two sons were born in 1987 and 1988, Matthew Kadoza Benson and Micah Timothy Benson ,respectively.

The family moved to Peekskill, NY in 1990 after Carl was hired as a Field Service Engineer specializing in radiology and laser technology by Becton Dickinson, an International Medical Technology Firm. Carl worked for the company for 25 years until his retirement in 2021. In 1993, a family home was purchased on Pomeroy Street on Peekskill, and a Church Home (family) was found at Mount Olivet Baptist Church, where he was an inaugural member of the Men's Choir. He also gave his time as a basketball coach, mentor and friend to so many people in the community during his 35 years in Peekskill.

He is survived by his two sons, sister; Theda Davis of Chambersburg, PA, two brothers; Will (Patricia) Benson, Jr. of Birmingham,. AL and Charles ( Malia) Benson of Laurel, MA, a treasured sister-in-law; Sharon Benson of Birmingham, AL, one aunt; Mattie Smith of Detroit, MI, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother; Curtis Pierre Benson.

Funeral Service will be held at Morning Star Baptist Church( 101 40th Ave No) on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 12:00 Noon. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Public visitation will be on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at the church from 11:00 A.M. until service at 12:00 Noon.
